My Story

In March 2022, my life was changed in an instant when I was involved in a serious car accident. The Great North Air Ambulance team saved my life by putting me into an induced coma at the roadside, protecting my brain from further damage, and then keeping me stable on the way to the hospital. I had sustained a brain injury and a broken pelvis, and my injuries were so severe that their specialist doctors were needed immediately.

I spent three months in James Cook Hospital, followed by a further 18 months of recovery at home. During that time, I had to relearn how to walk and talk, and slowly work towards gaining my independence back. It was a long, challenging journey that I never imagined I would face.

Every step I take and every running stride is only possible because of the incredible skill, speed, and compassion shown by the Great North Air Ambulance team when I needed them most.

This year, I’m running the Great North Run to give something back and to help make sure this lifesaving service can be there for others in their darkest moments. The Great North Air Ambulance is purely charity funded and receives no government funding, meaning they rely entirely on donations and support from the general public to continue saving lives.
