My Story
Hello everyone,
This year, I’m setting myself a massive challenge: participating in the Great North Run.
To give myself that extra bit of motivation - going from struggling to hit 3km without stopping to training for a half marathon - I’ve decided to run for a cause that is deeply personal to me. I am raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society. They offer help for Alzheimer's and Dementia.
I’m doing this in memory of a huge influence in my life who I lost in 2022: my Googe.
You might be wondering, "What is a Googe?" (or "Googie" to the younger kids!). In my family, for reasons I can't quite explain, that was our name for my Grandad.
My Googe ran a shop with my Nan for about 30 years. It was a proper "old school" shop, stepping inside felt like going back to the 80s or 90s. Because the shop was so retro, the equipment was too; there was no fancy tech, and Googe did all the sales with mental maths. He was incredibly sharp and never forgot a thing.
After we lost my Nan in 2019, Googe showed such strength. Despite a brief battle with cancer and back issues, he kept going with a positive outlook. However, we started to notice he wasn’t quite as sharp as he used to be. In 2020, we received the news that he had been diagnosed with Dementia with Lewy Body. He was looked after at home with my Aunt doing most of the care.
We were lucky that Googe remained "our Googie" for a long time. During our last Christmas together in 2021, he was on top form, enjoying every second with his family. Sadly, after a bout of Covid and complications in early 2022, his condition declined rapidly. He passed away in March,
surrounded by his family.
I know how lucky we were that he remembered us. What upsets me most about this illness is that so many people reach a stage where they can no longer recognise the people who love and care for them. I can’t imagine how anxious they must feel in those final stages.
I want to help the Alzheimer’s Society support those living with dementia and their families. If you can spare anything at all to sponsor my run, it would mean the world to me and to everyone affected by this "awful illness."
Thank you for reading,
Marc
