My Story

I'm running the 2026 Great North Run in support of Prostate Cancer UK.

Hi, my name is Dave, and I would like to share my story.

In 2025, whilst having a routine annual medical, I requested a PSA (Prostate specific antigen test).  Next day, I received a call from my doctor asking me to attend the surgery that afternoon. When I attended the doctor stated that my levels were higher than they should be, and he was referring me to the hospital for further tests for suspected prostate cancer. After more tests, an MRI scan and a biopsy it was confirmed that I had prostate cancer. After talking with my consultant and specialist nurse, it was agreed that because the cancer was very small and slow growing, that they would put me on active surveillance. This meant that I would be tested every 3 months , with a further MRI in 12 months.

Rolling forward to 2026, me being a positive person, I intend to meet this full on, and so I have signed up for the Great North Run in September running 13.1 miles from Newcastle to South Shields. I am doing this to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, who carry out extensive research, and actively raise awareness of Prostate Cancer. I have a link below, please could you help support me with this fundraiser no matter how large or small the donation, every penny counts!

I would also like to appeal to all you guys out there, go to your GP and get a test, I am one of the lucky ones, mine was detected early and is treatable, the longer you put off, you may not be so lucky!

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 8 men in the UK. That’s someone’s dad, brother, partner, or mate. I'm running to raise money for lifesaving research and support for men and their families affected by prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer UK are committed to a world where men's lives are not limited by prostate cancer. Your donations can help make this possible.
